As the NBA Vegas League finishes up, most of the players have found are returning or have found new homes but there are still a few stragglers.
The biggest name being floated with a new destination is Carmelo Anthony. While gun to my head Carmelo Anthony is a Rocket in October, any rational Knick fan is surely not happy every passing day Carmelo is a Knick. I am not sure which end has the holdup here but I do not what the Knicks could realistically ask for besides matching salaries. I consider myself a Carmelo detractor but I don’t see how even the biggest Carmelo fans see him and the Rockets as a fit. The Rockets seem to think Twitter followers and star power equate success but a big 3 of Paul, Harden, Anthony in a Mike D’Antoni offense couldn’t be worse compliments.
All 3 like to have the ball in their hands all the time and Harden and Melo especially love playing isolation, and an aging Melo and Paul may not appreciate playing in D’Antoni’s fast pace offense now in their 30s. So if I am the Knicks I try to move Carmelo for whatever you can as fast as you can. Just working the Trade Machine I see this as an amicable solution for what the teams are looking for.
On to Free Agent News, while most of your top tier guys have found their place a few interesting targets remain. Nerlens Noel is probably best talent on the market while him and the Mavericks are reportedly far away from agreement, he is still a restricted free agent and likely not going anywhere.
Nerlens would be huge asset to teams like the Thunder, Wizards and Lakers but those teams aren’t in a position to offer a deal with impending max deals to give out in the future. A team like the Nets not opposed to spending money this offseason for some reason could stand to offer Nerlens a big money deal to pair with D’Angelo Russell to win 30 games, but in the end he will stay a Maverick in 2017-2018. Two 2016-2017 Spurs are on the market, Pau already had a handshake agreement to return, while Manu is undetermined if heading to retirement. The most interesting name on the market that could make an impact on championship contender would be Tony Allen, while it is undetermined whether he would be willing to give a discount to chase a championship a lock down wing defender is something definitely be an asset. Clippers and Timberwolves already have rumored interest but in my opinion teams like Bucks, Trailblazers and Pelicans should look to add an elite defender to help against the superstars they will face in the playoffs.
